AMMI : Asutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute

Sir Asutosh Mookerjee CSI FRAS FRSE MRIA June 1864 – 25 May 1924)

Asutosh Mookerjee was a prolific Bengali educator, jurist, barrister and mathematician.

He was the first student to be awarded a dual degree (MA in Mathematics and MSc in physics) from Calcutta University. Perhaps the most emphatic figure of Indian education, he was a man of great personality, high self-respect, courage and towering administrative ability.

The second Indian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta for four consecutive two-year terms (1906–1914) and a fifth two-year term (1921–23), Mookerjee was responsible for the foundation of Rajabazar Science College. He was the legendary Vice Chancellor of the Calcutta University who transformed the University from an examining body to a center of higher education and research. His motto was nationalism through education. He associated men like Rabindranath Tagore, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, C.V. Raman et al with the University.

Mookerjee also played a vital role in the founding of Hazra Law College. The Calcutta Mathematical Society was also founded by Mookerjee in 1908. He was also the president of the inaugural session of the Indian Science Congress in 1914 . Asutosh College was also founded under his stewardship in 1916, when he was Vice-chancellor of University of Calcutta.

He was often called “Banglar Bagh” (‘The Bengal Tiger’) for his high self-esteem, courage and integrity.

Due to his high self-esteem, courage, integrity, and strong personality, Sir Asutosh was often referred to as ‘Banglar Bagh’ (Tiger of Bengal). British Administration respected him for his vast knowledge and unbiased attitude.  He was the first recipient of a dual degree of MA (in Mathematics and Physics) from Calcutta University. 

He was a competent and successful Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and remained as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court till his last days. He was instrumental in introducing curriculum of Science and law at the University of Calcutta
