1864    :     On 28th June, at 3.55 a.m. Asutosh, eldest son of Ganga Prasad and Jagattarini, was born at rented premises in Malanga Lane, Bowbazar, Calcutta.

 

1868    :     Ganga Prasad Mukherjee shifted to a rented house near Jadu Babu’s Bazar, Bhowanipur and started his medical practice.

 

1873    :     From 15th April, Ganga Prasad with his family began to live in his newly constructed house at 77, Russa Road North (now 77, Asutosh Mookherjee Road, Bhowanipur, Calcutta). His youngest child Hemlata was born.

 

1874    :     Illness; Asutosh went to Mathura with mother and sister Hemlata, to recover health. Met Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar at Mughalserai Railway station. At his request spent one day in his house at Karmatar, Santhal Paraganas, on way back to Calcutta. Again met him at Thacker & Spink Bookshop Gift of Life and Adventure of Robinson Crusoe from Vidyasagar (1875)

 

1875    :     Chakraberia School, Left home education.

 

1876    :     Suburban School, Acharya Sivnath Shastri was Head Master. Utkalbandhu Madhusudan Das private tutor.

 

1879   :      Scholarship in Entrance. Position Second.      

 

1881    :      Stood Third in First Arts (Intermediate), Presidency College – First in B.A. Mathematics Honours. Narendra Nath Dutta (Later Swami Vivekananda), Satish Chandra Mookherjee (of Dawan Society) and other were his batchmates. First paper in Mathematics published in international journal (1881), Age 17.

 

1883    :    Took admission in City College to study Law (Lord) S. P. Sinha mentor

 

1885    :    Stood First in M.A. in Mixed Mathematics. At the age of 21 elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Member, Royal Society of Edinburgh.

 

1886    :    Passed M.A. in Physical Science and Mixed Mathematics, first student of Calcutta University to obtain Master Degree in more than one subject. On 16 January married Smt. Jogmaya Devi, second daughter of Pandit Ramnarayan Bhattacharya of Krishnanagar.

 

                 Won Premchand-Roychand Studentship and Mouatt Gold Medal. Became Fellow, Edinburgh Royal Society, Member, Royal Asiatic Society and Bedford Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching.

 

1887    :     Appointed Hony. Professor of Mathematics at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science for two years; delivered 85 lectures based on original research. Appointed  Examiner in Mathematics, Calcutta University. Became Fellow, London Physical Society. On 1.11.1887, only brother Hemanta’s (1866-1887) untimely death. Took the degree of B. L. from City College. For three consecutive years awarded Tagore Law Gold medal.

 

1888    :     Articled to Sir Rashbehary Ghose enrolled as Vakil, Calcutta High Court on August 31. Became Fellow, Mathematical Societies of Edinburgh and Paris.

 

1889    :     Fellow  of the Senate January, 16 and member of the Syndicate (March, 30} of the University of Calcutta. Father Dr. Ganga Prasad Mookherjee passed away (13th December).

 

1890    :     Member, Mathematical Society of Palermo Sicily, and Society de Physique of France.

 

1891    :      Proposed (11th July) introduction of Bengali as a subject of study and examination in all standards of Calcutta University; rejected by the Syndicate by a majority.

 

1892    :     First published book – Geometry Conics’.

 

1893    :     Enrolled Member of the Irish Academy. Awarded Honours in Law. Member, Calcutta Municipal Corporation.

 

1894    :     Received the degree of Doctor in Law. Became Commissioner of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (1894-1904)

 

1898    :     Appointed Prasanna Coomer Tagore Law Professor, Calcutta University and delivered lectures on “Law of Perpetuities in British India published in book form.

 

1899    :     Returned to the Bengal Legislative Council as the Representative of Calcutta University.

 

1900    :     Fellow, American Mathematical Society.

 

1901    :      Re-elected to the Bengal Legislative Council from the University of Calcutta.

 

1901    :      Become a co-opted Member of the Indian Universities Commission (Raleigh Commission)

 

1903    :     Elected to the Bengal Legislative Council from Calcutta Municipal Corporation. Elected to the Imperial Legislative Council by defeating Sir Surendra Nath Banerjee and Maharaja of Darbhanga in a triangular contest.

 

1904    :     Appointed Puisne Judge, Calcutta High Court (1904-1923).

 

1906    :     Appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and held office for four successive terms (1906-1914). Youngest son Bama Prasad born.

 

1907    :     President, Asiatic Society of Bengal (1907-1909).

 

1908    :     Founder-President Calcutta Mathematical Society. D.Sc. (Honoris Causa) conferred by the University of Calcutta; President Board of Sanskrit Examination, Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Awarded the title ‘Companion of the Star of of India’. Youngest daughter Romola born.

 

1910    :      Elected President of the Imperial (now National) Library Council (1910-1924). President, Bibudha Jnanni Pandit Sabha, Nabadwip, Bangiya Dharmankur Bauddha Sabha.

 

1911    :       Received Kinghood

 

1913    :      Established Postgraduate Departments with teaching and research facilities in Calcutta University.

 

1914    :      Foundation of the College of Science Calcutta University laid (March, 27th); Founder-President Indian Science Congress.

 

1917    :       Member, Universities commission (Sadler Commission). President of the Post Graduate Councils in Arts & Science, Indian vernaculars introduced at M.A. level for study and research. Teaching and research facilities extended to Post Graduate level in Science subjects.

 

1920    :     Acting Chief Justice, Calcutta High Court.

 

1921    :      Fifth time Vice-Chacellor of Calcutta University in 1923. Reelected President of the Asiatic Society to 1923. First M.A. Examination held in Modern Indian Languages, Endowed Jagattarini Gold Medal to Calcutta University ; first recipient Rabindra Nath Tegore.

 

1922    :     On 8th December, presided over the Calcutta University Senate meeting rejecting conditional Government grant curtailing University’s autonomy. Demand for full freedom for C.U. in his speech; “Freedom First, freedom second, freedom Always.

 

1923    :     On 24th March, delivered his last Convocation Address of Calcutta University, and demanded full freedom for the University.

                              Eldest daughter Kamala passed away.

 

1924    :     On 1st January retired from the Bench, Convocation Address at the University of Lucknow, Endowment of Kamala Lecturership in Calcutta University in the memory of his eldest daughter. Resumed practice at the Bar Accepted brief to appear as Maharaja of Dumraon’s counsel in “ Dumraon Case” at Patna High Court.

 

 1924    :     On 25th May, passed away suddenly at Patna at 6.30 p.m
