The House of Sir Asutosh Mookhrejee founded by Dr. Ganga Prasad Mookhrejee (1873) on 77, Russa (Pagla) Road North is one of the most prominent landmarks in Calcutta. Not only as an ancestral residential mansion of an eminent family or of great individuals, it is a history by itself. From the 1870s, around this house and the family grew up the educational and cultural life of Bhowanipore – Kalighat area and later of entire South Calcutta. By the time Dr. Ganga Prasad Mookherjee with his family settled in this area. Bhowanipore grew into a sprawling and thriving middle class locality headed by doctors, lawyers, teachers, judges and other professionals.
Historical Significance –The house at 77, Asutosh Mookherjee Road at Bhowanipore was not only the residence of Sir Asutosh & Dr. Shyamaprosad, but an iconic house of Kolkata in respect of education and socio- political scenario of Bengal. Many eminent personalities of that time, were friends of Dr. Gangaprasad( father) and used to visit his house regularly, like- Rashbehari Ghosh, Dwarakanath Mitra Jadunath Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar,GurudasChattopadhyay,Pundit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, Acharya Shibnath Shastri, etc. Even member of Jorasanko Thakur family used to come as a family friends .
