Family Legacy
The family legacy of this Mukhopadhyay family dates back to ancient days. From an ancient family tree, it was found, that they were the descendants of the Poet Krittibas Ojha. Originally they were from Digsiu, but the grandfather of Sir Asutosh i.e. Shri Biswanath Mukhopadhyay settled in the village Jirat of Hooghly district. He had four sons. Durgaprasad, Hariprasad, Gangaprasad, and Radhikaprasad. The eldest brother, Durgaprasad initially joined the government service as Surveyor and then promoted to Engineer. The second brother Hariprasad went back to Jirat and practiced there as a village doctor. The third brother, Gangaprasad was an intelligent, meritorious student who received scholarships throughout his student life and became a Doctor. The youngest one Radhikaprasad was a Civil Engineer from B.E.College, Shibpur, and held a senior post in Govt. service, a member of the Senate at the University of Calcutta as well.
The house at 77, Russa Road at Bhowanipore was an iconic house at that time in respect of education and socio-political culture. Many eminent personalities of different fields of that time, were friends of Dr. Gangaprasad and used to visit his house regularly. This family also had a cordial relation with the Jorasanko Thakur family.
Dr. Gangaprasad Mukhopadhayay was the father of Sir Asutosh, who remained the brightest son of the family. However, his four sons of were also equally famous in the education, legal and political field, such as Ramaprasad (a Judge), Dr. Shyamaprasad, a very popular figure(a Barrister, Political leader, founder of Hindu Mahasabha, Cabinet Minister and Vice-chancellor of Calcutta University), Uma Prasad (an author/traveler) and Bamaprasad( an Engineer). The legacy was also carried away to date by his Grandsons, like Manotosh ( a barrister), Shibotosh ( a Scientist), and Chittotosh Mookerjee (Chief Justice of Calcutta and Bombay High court).
